In general, I do better working individually or in a small group of two to three people including myself). I think that during group work, some of my strengths include analytical thinking and creative thinking. I feel like I am naturally a very analytical thinker, and this is a skill that does help me do well with group work. During the construction of our Rube Goldberg, I think that we all, as a group, had to think in a very analytical way. Thinking in an analytical way was really helpful for us when we were making our Rube because there were a lot of refinements to be made to make sure that it worked and went smoothly. My next strength would maybe be creative thinking. When I do a project, I like to try and come up with creative ideas because I want my work to be different and I want it to stand out. Thinking creatively can also help to challenge me to go deeper with a project. On the other side, are my weaknesses, my weaknesses during group work are leadership and effective communication. These two skills are hard for me because I am not a very outspoken or outgoing person. Leaders are generally more outgoing and leadership often comes naturally to them. I struggle with communication for the same reason I struggle with leadership. In my experience, a big part of group work is communication, and I can communicate, it’s just not something that is as easy for me as some other people. I will continue to push myself in attempts to build up the skills I need work on and also try to develop new skills.

As we start to work out the specifics of this project, we have to ask ourselves what we want to accomplish. I really would like to see this project have a big impact on the users. I hope that the exhibition will not only be fun and engaging, but educational and eye-opening as well. I think that if we really work hard on this project, we can ensure that people leave the exhibition with new knowledge and a different way to look at society.
We do hope to have diversity in our users. For this exhibition, we do not want only parents to attend. We hope for teachers, professors, students, and more to join us. Something that I would like to hear from a parent is maybe that they are impressed that high schoolers could create something this powerful. Something that I would like to hear from a Sociology Professor is maybe that all of our information is accurate. On the topic of accuracy, something that we need to be really aware of is making sure that all of our information is accurate. We want to present our users with correct and current facts. To verify that we have accurate information, we can do more research, and re-read the handouts we were given in class. We can also try and set up interviews with Sociology professors. The last few weeks in class have been filled with brainstorms and prototyping. As this project starts to come to a close, a new one begins. We have finished our masks and we are continuing to make refinements on our essays. Usually at the end of a big project an exhibition is in store. Although, this time it will be a little bit different. The vision is for our exhibition is to turn it into an action piece. We have been focusing on creating awareness towards the effects of socialization, conducting social experiments, and proving an engaging and interactive way for the community of Durango to get involved with our work here at AHS. We practiced design thinking and protocol to come up with a prototype for the exhibition. Working in small groups, we collaborated, brainstormed, and inquired in an attempt to create an exciting and educational idea for the exhibition. We reached out towards community members for feedback on our prototypes. After gathering new information on what community members would be interested in, we voted on a prototype. This prototype will be our base, our foundation, and it will allow us to build and refine it to create something that will hopefully be as impactful as we want it to be.
The exhibition will create awareness on how we are socialized and how the agents of socialization impact us. Some people, who would be otherwise blind to this, might find themselves learning a lot about themselves and how they are contributing to society. The exhibition will be almost like a simulation. In the end, users will have a choice of taking a direction for change, or they can do nothing. Hopefully we can change the way people thing about the everyday things they do so mindlessly, and see the impact that they are creating. If this exhibition can go somewhat like we envisioned it to be, I think it will turn out great. The concept we are working with is very exciting. If we can better a part of our Durango community, we can probably accomplish bigger things as well. There are so many parts and pieces to this exhibition. I am happy that I can be a part of a project like this. I think something I might be interested in working with in this exhibition may be design, props, or fundraising (maybe?). Working on the design part, or artistic part of this project could be a good way to really dig deeper into the content to create sensual and visual pieces to the exhibition. From the small group work we did in the last few weeks, I think something that can help us is to find a way that the group can be productive and enjoy the work at the same time. For one part of the prototyping process, we had to create a video and also send out emails to community members. Half of my group was really interested and excited about the video making, and the other half of us were interested in writing the emails. We all got to do something that we were interested in and we got a lot of work done in the process. |
